City of Grande Prairie Youth Career Discovery Expo

The IPM Program participated in the 2024 Youth Career Discovery Expo in Grande Prairie AB today! Our program helped promote our field entomology research program while also describing how High School, Post-Secondary, or even Graduate students can apply to work for the Federal Student Work Employment Program (FSWEP). We talked about the Beaverlodge Research Farm which is part of the network of Agriculture and Agri-Food Research and Development Centres spread across Canada and the types of research that takes place at our Farm. 

The day-long event drew at least 2000 students from across the region! We were pleased to showcase a small portion of our insect voucher specimens (Figs. 1-2 and 4-7) using an interactive "Insect Scavenger Hunt" created by our two technicians, Amanda and Shelby!  Keen visitors were challenged to find three different insects amongst the pinned voucher specimens we brought along to view. Winners earned their very own ground beetle to take home (Figs. 3 and 8)!  We were one of the few agricultural careers to be included in this special event!

Many thanks to our program's two excellent technicians, Amanda and Shelby, and to the City of Grande Prairie for hosting this important event!  Amanda, Shelby, and Jennifer spoke with 200-some students who stopped by to talk! The most exciting part of the day was that 60 carefully curated ground beetle specimens were adopted to good homes with students who left us feeling pretty excited about Entomology!

Winter 2022 and our IPM Team!

Our field research program at Beaverlodge hinges on technical support - these are people who implement the science we are fortunate to be supported to do in the Peace River region!

This winter, our program has new people hired who are rapidly learning a LOT about how to process and begin to identify the more than 110 arthropod species that are active in annual and perennial field crops  grown throughout the region. Learn more about Jordon, Vicky, Tessa, and Tanya. They join ShelbyAmanda, and me and we're the IPM Team for the winter of 2022!

Welcome Jordon!

Greetings, I am Jordon Chan – currently a Research Assistant in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at the Beaverlodge Research Farm. I started with the program in early December and I will be working with them until late April 2022. 

In terms of my background, I studied at the Red Deer College/Polytechnic, earning a General Kinesiology Diploma in 2013 prior to initiating studies at the University of Alberta where I earned my Bachelor of Science with Specialization in Microbiology as well as a Research Certificate in Biological Sciences in 2017. I am currently focusing on an online M.Sc. in International Security at the Paris Graduate School and a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at Thompson Rivers University. 

My curiosity has led me to travel and new experiences. I've travelled to the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Eastern Canada, and the Southeastern Continental USA. As part of my current job, the processing of wireworm pitfall samples for the AAF-SRDP 2019E13R Biodiversity Project, has developed a new intrigue with the diversity in carabids, staphylinids, and elaterids. I like to be active and about with pursuits ranging from training, studying, SCUBA diving, dancing, hiking, or camping in my rooftop tent.

Welcome Tanya!

My name is Tanya Proctor. I'm 46-yrs-old and Mom to two grown boys.

I recently joined the team at the Beaverlodge Research Farm where I am working in the Insect Pest Management (IPM) program. I am helping process wireworm pitfall samples collected as part of the AAF-SRDP 2019E13R Biodiversity  Project. I am busy familiarizing myself with the families of insects within the order of Coleoptera, or the beetles. Data collected from these samples will be used to determine which species of wireworms or click beetles (Elateridae) are present and active in field crops grown in the Peace River region.

I've worked in horticulture since 2007, when I started out as a seasonal temporary employee helping to sort tree seedlings to specific size, and get them packaged up and ready to ship out for planting. I realized this was something I wanted to know more about so I started with the company full time, joining the grow team as the irrigation specialist. Along with many other tasks, I would walk the crops of 10-12 million tree seedlings every day to monitor the watering needs, as well as watch for pests, diseases, irregular growth patterns. In 2008, I began online horticulture classes through the University of Guelph while continuing to work full time. In 2014 I completed my Horticulture Certificate. I intend to continue these classes and finish my full diploma in Horticulture.

I am interested and excited to learn more about all insects and how they affect the crops grown in our area!

Perils of processing pitfalls

During the Fall and Winter seasons the IPM lab focuses on processing the numerous field-collected samples. One of these tasks is processing pitfalls. Pitfall traps are used to monitor insect pests, especially those that crawl on the surface of the ground like adult beetles. A pitfall trap consists of a small container filled with RV plumbing anti-freeze submerged into the soil so its opening is level with the soil surface (Fig. 1). A rainfall cover is staked to the ground 1” above the trap to keep rain and larger animals like mice out. The trap is left for seven to 10 days then the content is retrieved, labelled and preserved in ethanol and refrigerated until processed at a later date.

During the Fall and Winter months, stored pitfalls are retrieved for individual processing via submersion in water. The samples, which are stored in cheesecloth bundles, are opened into a tray of water (~1.5 L water in a ~4 L tray) because arthropods normally float and most of the soil/rocks sink. This pre-sorts the sample. Elaterids, carabids, staphylinids, and arachnids are then hand-sorted, recorded, and transferred to labelled vials with 95% ETOH. They are stored for further processing, like sex determination and species identification.

Over the past month, Tia and I have been working on two main studies using pitfalls, the Canola Agronomic Research Program (CARP) project and the wireworm monitoring project, both of which are extensive projects with sites across the Peace River region. The wireworm project additionally involves testing pheromone lures used in pitfall trapping.

It is important to monitor wireworms, which are actually the larvae of click beetles (Elataridae), because they can be harmful to crops throughout their lifecycle. Click beetle larvae, often referred to as wireworms, cause economic damage as they feed on germinating seeds and decrease both plant establishment and densities in all field crops. Pheromone lures attract wireworms by emitting the same chemicals as germinating seeds, which the wireworms detect when finding food. Pitfall traps mainly catch adult click beetles because the larvae live beneath the soil surface. We also monitor carabid beetles retrieved from these pitfall samples. Carabids are important to the agroecosystem because this large group of species can be natural predators of click beetles. At least 16 species of carabids are commonly found in fields in the Peace River region. They range in size and color (Fig. 3).
